Urben Studio provides urban planning and development services, primarily development consent management for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects and strategic spatial master planning.
We have been engaged on high profile infrastructure projects such as the Thames Tideway Tunnel project where we worked in a multi-consultant team to secure the Development Consent Order (DCO), and Crossrail where we had an advisory role to ensure that any necessary planning and heritage consents were obtained in accordance with the Crossrail Act (2008).
We have advised local planning authorities on their assessment of major applications for mixed use developments, and acted as planning consultant to the National Trust.
Internationally, we have contributed to Urban Planning Advisory Teams (UPATs) arranged by the International Society of City and Regional Planners. A 2015 UPAT to the Gaza Strip for UN Development Programme considered how to build back better, and in 2018 a UPAT to Bodø in Norway undertook a peer review of plans for a new airport and city.
An interest in making cities more productive and efficient places has also led to us undertaking research into urban agriculture and underground urbanism. Our research into the planning and design of the urban subsurface has been recognised by an award from the Royal College of Art and included in the Crossrail Learning Legacy programme, been presented at international conferences, and will soon culminate in a book titled Underground Urbanism.
We are experienced in providing the following services:

Design Strategy & Guidance
Urben have produced a wide-range of Design Strategies and Guidance documents for clients in both the public and private sectors. Specialising in public realm design guidance, we have worked alongside architects and highway engineers to develop guidance which helps to ensure continuity of the highest quality in street and space design, while also taking into account local character and distinctiveness, and reflecting differing budgets and maintenance requirements.
Research & Advisory
Since our inception, Urben has dedicated time and resource to research and advisory projects, both as a practice and as individual professionals. From working on design review panels to supporting a range of charitable organisations with Pro Bono services, we have helped to ensure that everybody has access to high quality design advice in order to make our towns and cities the best places they can be.
We have also worked with organisations such as the Royal College of Art and British Geological Survey on research projects which look at innovating new design approaches and solutions, with a particular focus on the subsurface of our towns and cities. We are also founder members of Think Deep UK (TDUK) a multi-disciplinary group of professionals with a particular interest in the design and development of the urban sub-surface.
